Each year we do a school day presentation for children from elementary through high school. It's part of our commitment to educating the public about this time in our history. We have military demonstrations for infantry and artillery. There will be a company street set up to show where and how the men lived while in camp. We'll have a camp cook. There's a blacksmith and several other stations to see. The people at the stations are prepared to show the students what they're doing, and explain.

Participation is by invitation. We can accommodate about 1500 students. You can request an invitation by contacting Petra Darby. Her email address is petradarby@yahoo.com.

School Day begins on Friday at 9:00 am and continues until about 1:00 pm. We stagger the times for the classes to arrive so the presentations don't bunch up too much. Allow about 2 hours to see all the presentations.

Teachers/student coordinators should be aware that we charge $5.00 per child to attend the presentation. The fee is used to offset liability insurance and other expenses. Also, please be aware that we do not have the convenience of accepting a credit card.

I feel compelled to say this every year. We don't know what the weather will be like. Some years it has been really nice. And some years it has been cold and wet. PLEASE check the weather before you come out and plan accordingly. If a sweater or jacket is not necessary, the students can leave them on the bus.

Is Time Travel Possible?? Yes, of course it is. Imagine bringing South Carolina history to life and giving your students a glimpse of life in the 1860’s. Here’s an opportunity to take your students back to March of 1865. See what it was like to be an Infantry Soldier or be in the Artillery manning a cannon.

Mark your calendars for March 10, 2017. Come join us at the Columns on Rankin Plantation in Florence. Step back in time and visit demonstrations that include infantry, artillery, cavalry, and medical impressions, along with tours of period camps, cooking, blacksmith, and sutlery presentations.

It's about time to begin scheduling your classes to take a field trip to the Columns. The date this year is Friday, March 11, 2016 with tours starting at 9 am. We will strive to meet everyone's needs and preferences, and appreciate the cooperation you’ve always given us. We charge $5 per student with teachers and chaperons attending free of charge.

To schedule a time, please fill out the registration form found by clicking here. You will receive an email closer to the School Day giving full details of the day.

Help us spread the word about this wonderful educational field trip opportunity to other teachers that may be interested. If there is anything I can help you with, please e-mail me at petradarby@yahoo.com.

Looking forward to seeing you all in March.

Thank you,

Petra Darby
