The idea for the 23rd's scholarship project came about in 2005. I don't remember who came up with the idea, but it was immediately embraced by many of the members. We wanted our award to be in keeping with our goal to educate about history. The 23rd SC Civil War Reenactors Group Scholarship is $1000 and is awarded to a student at Francis Marion University who is entering their senior year as a history major. Our thought was that someone in this position would possibly become a teacher. When you support a teacher, you support all their students as well.
The award is funded by our reenactment, the school day program and contributions. It is our hope that one day it can become an endowment that will be self perpetuating.
Scholarships have been made each year since 2006. We make the award in July or August so it will be in time for the upcoming year. Application for the scholarship is made through the Financial Assistance office at Francis Marion University. Contact them by telephone at 843-661-1190.
